Q AND A WITH MONSTER ENERGY KAWASAKI’S JET SKI RACER DUSTIN FARTHING
Staff
Kawasaki is no stranger to winning personal watercraft (PWC) races and Monster Energy Kawasaki Jet Ski pilot Dustin Farthing is keeping that tradition alive in 2009. He currently leads the APBA National Series aboard his Kawasaki Jet Ski Ultra® 260X. We caught up with Farthing to chat about how his season is going, his expectations for the rest of 2009, and what he does when he’s not racing.
Q: You are now past the halfway point in the APBA National Series. How have things been going?
Dusting Farthing: It’s gone really well. We’ve had some good events with great locations. I’m lucky enough to enjoy the points lead right now and hopefully I can continue to get good results.
Q: How do you train for PWC racing?
D.F.: I do a lot of motocross. I’ve got a KX™250F that I ride for training. I do a lot of stuff in the gym as well, but getting out on the ski important since it’s really the best training for what I do.
Q: How did you get it?
D.F.: My father got me into 18 years ago. I raced three wheelers and four wheelers when I was a kid and then my dad bought me my first PWC. We took it to a couple of races and one thing led to another. All of a sudden, we were racing full time. I was hooked.
Q: What hobbies do you have outside racing?
D.F.: I ride motocross a lot. I live in Florida and there are a lot of good motocross tracks down there. In the winter, there are a few motocross events in Florida that I try to race. I love extreme sports. I like to snowboard a couple times a year. I live right by the beach, so I take advantage of it and surf as much as I can. I also skateboard. I have a half pipe at my house. I pretty much try to stay as active as possible.
Q: What are your expectations for the rest of the season?
D.F.: I mainly want to stay consistent and win as many races as possible. Our goal is to win the championship and hopefully I can go to the World Finals and win big there as well.
Q: Are there a lot of Kawasaki Jet Ski’s that race in your series?
D.F.: Kawasaki is by far the main watercraft to have in this type of racing. I would say that Kawasaki makes up about 70-75 percent of the entries in the series. They are an obvious rider favorite.
Q: What makes the Kawasaki Ultra 260X such a great ski to race? Is there something about it that fits your style?
D.F.: That boat does fit me really well. In my opinion it’s a really versatile ski compared to the others because it adapts well to both riding conditions. When it’s really rough, like in the ocean, it’s a really good hull. The ski is built really well and handles great in tough conditions. It’s a really fast ski in flat water as well.
Q: You have obviously done well so far this year. Who’s been helping you to make that happen?
D.F.: I would definitely like to thank Kawasaki. I’ve been riding with them since 2003 and they are an awesome company. Without them, I couldn’t do this. Also I want to thank Monster Energy, TBM racing, Jet Pilot, Skat Trak, Hyrdo Turf, Red Line Oils, Thor helmets, and Smith goggles. Without my sponsors I wouldn’t be able to do what I love to do.
